White Iris
This picture is all about the colors! It could have been framed better and probably focused to be much more interesting but I love the deepness of the green and the contrast of the white and yellow against it.

5 Mile Beach - San Francisco
I actually find this photo a little boring. Not much there to capture one’s interest. But I selected it because I like both the quantity of detail in the sand and the colors. Now, next photo please…

A Stormy Sunrise in San Francisco
Shortly after waking one morning, I saw the sun began to rise and highlight some fantastic storm clouds out my window. I like the darkness and texture the sun’s rays emphasize in the clouds. Once again, I wish this image had just a touch more detail in the foreground.

Renaissance Fair Henna Artist
This is one of my all time favorite photos. It is also one of the first images I shot with my then new digital SLR. I was using the built in portrait mode and just really like how it caught the woman’s face, gave a little blur to the background and kept the colors vibrant. The overcast day also provided a very gentle light that I think suits this portrait well.

Today, one of my favorite RSS feeds (phototuts) presented an article on stock photography for beginners. While I know I am still too much of a beginner to publish my work the post did lead me on a bit of a quest and I found some great links… Here are some of the places I ended up:
Bernie’s Better Beginner Guide to Photography
DPhoto Journal
How to get a professional look with color
Color Symbolism and Psychology
Some great food for thought here. Hopefully I can make use of it in the future.

San Francisco Sunset
This is not the best photo out of the ones I have selected to post this month. I shot it right after purchasing a polarizing filter for my camera. I was playing around and managed to snap this. Its a little blurry but I love the vividness of the colors and the contrast between the foreground and sky.

Sunrise Over The Old Castle Wall
Alright… The plan over the next month or so is to take a look back through some of my old photos. I have a lot of mediocre shots but here and there I have some favorites – often surprises – that turned out really well. The goal of this reflection process is to really figure out what I like when I take a ‘good’ photo. What makes it work – or not – from an aesthetic perspective.
I selected this photo because I love how I managed to catch the sun just in the corner of the crumbling old wall. Though I actually snapped about 6 shots of this exact same thing, the one just before this didn’t have the sun and the one right after had too much. My timing was mostly luck.
I do wish I could have gotten a slightly better exposure on the foreground – Just a little detail to reveal how lush and green the plants were in the early morning light.
